[ARCHIVED] Jackson City Council Feb. 21, 2023 meeting

Jackson City Council Meeting Update (6)

Here are highlights of what happened at the Feb. 21, 2023 meeting of the Jackson City Council

  • Voters in Jackson’s Second Ward will be voting at new locations during 2023. The City Council approved a plan to shift voters to other polling places due to ongoing construction at the Boos Recreation Center, which is the Ward 2 polling place. Impacted voters will receive a mailed notice from the City Clerk’s Office informing them of the change.
  • City of Jackson elections could be shifting from odd to even year election cycles. City elections for the Mayor, Treasurer and City Councilmembers are currently held in odd-numbered years (2021, 2023) while elections for Governor and President are held in even years (2020, 2022). The City Council has decided to hold a hearing at the March 7 meeting to discuss the proposal further. Moving elections to even years would save the City money and increase voter participation in City elections.
  • S. MLK Drive could be seeing a substantial street improvement project in the coming years. The City Council voted to apply for a grant that would be used to rebuild the S. MLK Drive corridor from E. Morrell Street to E. South Street. This would include lane reductions, making the corridor more pedestrian-friendly, and get it ready for commercial and residential reinvestment.

A recording of the meeting is available on this page.
