Here are highlights of what happened at the Jan. 24, 2023 meeting of the Jackson City Council:

  • A presentation by the developer of the Hayes Hotel was given to the City Council. J. Jeffers & Co. of Milwaukee revealed they are planning to start construction on the historic property in Sept. 2023, with completion of the rehabilitation expected in early 2025. A $27 million project is expected to bring 84 apartments, along with event, retail and commercial space to the facility. The City Council voted to extend the City’s development agreement with J. Jeffers & Co. so they can continue to seek additional State of Michigan funds and plan construction.
  • The MLK Drive roundabout is getting a new sculpture. The City Council decided to select a design by artist Maxwell Emcays named “The Tower of Us/We Rise”. This sculpture was the preference of the roundabout sculpture committee and residents involved in the selection process. This will be the fourth roundabout/gateway in the City to receive an art installation.
  • The Central Fire Station is getting new windows and new overhead doors. The City Council approved the updates at the fire station.
