Jackson City Council Meeting Update (2)

Here are highlights from the April 5, 2022 Jackson City Council meeting:

-After sitting vacant for nearly 20 years, the City Council has approved the sale of the Hayes Hotel property in Downtown Jackson. The former hotel building has been sold to a developer, who plans to use it for 91 market rate apartments, along with event and commercial space.  This will bring a $27 million investment and a sizable economic boost to the community.

-Plans are in the works to replace the MLK Equality Trail in the City. The City Council approved the use of federal funds for a future project, which will widen and resurface the City’s main pedestrian trail. These funds are to be specifically be used for projects like pedestrian trails.

-Seven new street lights are coming to Jackson neighborhoods following a vote from the City Council. More street light improvements are planned later this year.

-A new Community Garden Ordinance has been approved just in time for spring. The new ordinance sets guidelines for non-profit and community-based groups to have community gardens and greenhouses.
