[ARCHIVED] Jackson City Council Feb. 23, 2021 meeting

Jackson City Council 2-23-21 meeting

The Jackson City Council held a virtual meeting on Feb. 23, 2021. Here are highlights from the meeting:

  • The City Council unanimously approved the first reading of a Fair Chance Housing Ordinance for the City. The ordinance would prohibit landlords from asking potential renters about their conviction history during the initial screening process, postpone any background check until a conditional lease is offered, prevent landlords from unfairly denying applications for housing solely based on criminal history, unless it would impact public safety, property or other tenants, and allow tenants to show evidence of rehabilitation prior to final denial by a landlord. The ordinance intends to give people with a criminal record increased access to stable housing to reduce recidivism and allow for job opportunities. Final consideration will take place at an upcoming meeting.
  • An engineering contract was awarded to engineer a new pedestrian trail along Elmdale Drive in Ella Sharp Park. The current trail is in deteriorating condition and is too close to the road. The revised trail project is funded through a Safe Walk to School Grant, because the trail is used to connect Middle School at Parkside with a neighborhood on the other side of the park. Construction will start later this year.
  • The sale of City-owned property at the corner of Lansing Avenue and Hill Street was approved by the Council.
  • The City Council voted to renew a contract for police officer body cameras.

The next City Council meeting is Tuesday, March 9. A recording of the meeting is available on this page.
