[ARCHIVED] Jackson Fire Department installs Narcan box to combat opioid overdoses

Narcan box at Jackson Central Fire Station

The Jackson Fire Department (JFD) has taken a proactive step in the fight against opioid overdoses by installing a publicly accessible Narcan box at the Central Fire Station. This initiative, which is made possible through a partnership with local organization Home of New Vision, aims to provide life-saving resources to residents in need.

The Narcan box is stocked with Naloxone (commonly known as Narcan), a medication designed to rapidly reverse opioid overdoses, as well as informational literature on opioid addiction resources available within the Jackson community. Home of New Vision will be responsible for maintaining and restocking the box, ensuring continued access to these critical supplies.

“As first responders, we see firsthand the devastating impact of opioid overdoses in our community,” said Joe Smith, Assistant Fire Chief of the Jackson Fire Department. “By making Narcan readily available, we hope to empower residents to take action in emergency situations and ultimately reduce the number of lives lost to overdoses.”

Opioid overdoses remain a pressing public health crisis across the country, and Jackson is not immune to its effects. Equipping the community with Narcan is an essential harm-reduction strategy that aligns with ongoing efforts to combat the opioid epidemic. The availability of Narcan in public spaces has been shown to significantly decrease overall opioid-related fatalities.

“We are proud to partner with the Jackson Fire Department on this initiative,” said Brooke Cross, Director of Jackson Services at Home of New Vision. “Providing access to Narcan and educational resources is a vital step toward reducing stigma, increasing awareness, and saving lives.”

The Narcan box is located outside the front entrance of JFD’s Central Fire Station at 518 N Jackson St. and is available for public use. Community members are encouraged to take advantage of this free resource, ensuring they are prepared to respond to an overdose emergency.
