[ARCHIVED] MLK Equality Trail reopens following construction project

MLK trail June 2024

The MLK Equality Trail is back open following a trail replacement project! The trail section from S. West Avenue to the Optimist Rest Shelter received a new 12 foot wide concrete surface, replacing deteriorating pavement in poor condition.

The path was widened to allow for safer sharing, but also bring it up to modern standards and make it more accessible to people with disabilities. The trail section from S. MLK Drive and W. Prospect Street will be replaced starting in July. The MLK Equality Trail is Jackson's main pedestrian trail that stretches from Downtown Jackson to the Falling Waters Trail in Summit Township.

Construction on other trail sections will continue in 2025, which will complete replacements on the entire length of the trail! These replacements are funded by grants from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.
