W. North Street was reopened to vehicle and pedestrian traffic on Friday. Aug. 25. The street was closed between N. Blackstone Street and Cooper Street since Tuesday, Aug. 22 due to a massive fire at a commercial building. Part of the building collapsed on the roadway and required several days of cleanup before it could be reopened.
Hazardous debris from the fire also had to be cleaned up. Tests from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) found asbestos in debris near the fire site. Debris and ash that fell on nearby neighborhoods was not found to be harmful to residents.
The investigation into the fire's cause is ongoing.
