Jackson's MLK Equality Trail has its first piece of public art! "Community of Shapes" was unveiled Friday, July 28 during a special event where the trail crosses S. MLK Drive. This sculpture by artists Chris Turner and Doug Jones was selected by the City Council earlier this year after review by the Jackson Public Arts Commission.
The Detroit-based artists designed the piece to reflect Jackson's diversity coming together. The sculpture's colors were selected through a survey of south side residents. Artist Doug Jones is a Jackson native and says he's excited to do a sculpture for his hometown.
Another sculpture will be added to the S. MLK Drive roundabout later this summer, adding more public art to Jackson's south side.
