The Jackson community is invited to a sign unveiling that recognizes a street renamed for a late City Councilmember. The Carl Breeding Way street sign unveiling is happening Monday, Nov. 25, 10 a.m in Grover Leake Park, 152 E. Prospect St.
In Sept., the City Council unanimously voted to rename Milwaukee Avenue on Jackson’s south side after late City Councilmember Carl Breeding (1932-2012). The street is now known as Carl Breeding Way. Breeding was a community leader who represented Ward 1 on the City Council from 1997 to 2012. In addition to a 28 year career as a math teacher at Jackson High School, he was a member of the Jackson Human Relations Commission and served as the president of the Michigan NAACP and vice president of the national NAACP. Breeding resided on this street during his time as a councilmember. The City of Jackson proposed the renaming to commemorate Breeding’s legacy and his advocacy for racial equality.
Residents and local media are invited to attend the renaming celebration, which will include remarks from local officials and a new street sign unveiling. Grover Leake Park is located at the intersection of Carl Breeding Way and E. Prospect Street.
