Reducing and eliminating violence in Jackson will be the focus of an upcoming community event. Jackson’s 3rd Annual Summit to Reduce Violence is planned for Wednesday, April 17, 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the American 1 Event Center.
Now in its third year, the Summit to Reduce Violence continues its mission to assist the Jackson community in reducing and eliminating violence. Initially, the focus was on identifying problems caused by violence. The following year, the spotlight shifted to solutions to these issues. This year, the community is uniting under the theme of taking action to put an end to violence.
The annual event is organized by residents and organizations working together to reduce gun violence, including Jackson County Prosecutor Jerry Jarzynka, City of Jackson, Jackson Police Department, Group Violence Intervention, Jackson Juneteenth Committee, Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Jackson Public Schools and LifeWays. “By coming together, our goal is to create concrete plans of action that will eradicate violence in Jackson,” said John Willis, an event organizer. "We’re looking forward to furthering these discussions and make a difference in the community.”
The summit’s keynote speaker will be David M. Kennedy, Director of the National Network for Safe Communities and Professor at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice. Participants may register for the free event online. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. The American 1 Event Center is located at 128 W. Ganson St. Call 517-768-8728 for more information.
