Under the Oaks
Under the Oaks is a small park with a big history. On July 6, 1854, a large gathering of anti-slavery supporters gathered in the area of Franklin and Second streets where the present day park is located. Some attribute this event as the start of the Republican Party, making Jackson the birthplace of the party.
Under the Oaks now holds various historical markers and monuments to mark this important piece of Jackson history.
