The Jackson City Council held its fifth virtual meeting of the COVID-19 pandemic on May 12, 2020. Here are some highlights of what was decided.

  • A special tax assessment proposal for property owners on W. Franklin Street to replace the water main and construct a new roadway was a big topic of discussion. The council voted unanimously to postpone the consideration of the assessment until the next meeting on May 26.
  • The council also voted to make changes to the City’s special assessment policy, such as capping assessments at $15,000 and changing the special assessment hearing notice go out 20 days before the hearing date. It was previously going out 10 days prior.
  • Three Fifth Ward residents, Susan Murdie, Peter Bormuth, and Karen Bunnell, have applied for the vacant Fifth Ward City Council seat. The council voted to direct the Interim City Manager to set up a meeting for interviews with the council. No date has been finalized.
  • Changes were made to marijuana ordinances, such as allowing medical marijuana facilities to turn into adult use facilities.

The next regularly scheduled meeting is Tuesday, May 26. Plans also call for holding this meeting virtually.
