It is the responsibility of the planning director/zoning administrator to provide analysis and recommendations to the Zoning Board of Appeals regarding supplemental, dimensional, and use variance applications requesting deviation from the Zoning Ordinance and requirements such as minimum building setbacks, landscaping requirements, and the size of signs. The zoning administrator is charged with administering the ordinances on a day-to-day basis with the assistance of the Community Development Department. The deputy city attorney is available to consult on the legal ramifications of the decisions made by the board; other municipal officials are also consulted as needed.
Meetings are generally organized for 5:30 p.m. on the 4th Thursday of each month in the City Council Chambers on the 2nd floor of City Hall, 161 W. Michigan Ave. Jackson, MI 49201. 2023 Meeting and Deadline Schedule (PDF).
The Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) is comprised of five members and up to two alternate members. The remaining members are appointed from among the residents of the city by the mayor with the consent of the City Council.
