Traffic & Streets

Types of Signs
Engineering maintains more than 11,000 traffic and street name signs. The signs are designed and installed according to Michigan Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices. They are grouped into several categories:
  • Regulatory signs regulate traffic such as speed, stop, or yield signs
  • Warning signs are diamond-shaped with a yellow background
  • Guide signs usually have green or brown backgrounds that help motorists navigate through unfamiliar areas
