Types of Signs
Engineering maintains more than 11,000 traffic and street name signs. The signs are designed and installed according to Michigan Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices. They are grouped into several categories:
- Regulatory signs regulate traffic such as speed, stop, or yield signs
- Warning signs are diamond-shaped with a yellow background
- Guide signs usually have green or brown backgrounds that help motorists navigate through unfamiliar areas
Reporting Sign Problems
Problems with existing signs can be reported in several ways, depending on the urgency of the problem.
Missing or Damaged Stop & Yield Signs
Missing or damaged stop or yield signs are considered urgent and can be reported in 2 ways:
- Call the Parking Manager / Engineering Assistant between Monday and Friday from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. at 517-788-4160
- Call the Police Department during nights or weekends at 517-788-4100
Non-Urgent Sign Problems
Non-urgent sign problems can be reported in 2 ways:
- Email us with a description of the location of the problem and any other pertinent information
- Call the Engineering Division at 517-788-4160 between Monday and Friday from 8 am - 5 p.m.
