City of Jackson

Street Lights

There are approximately 2,200 street lights within the Jackson city limits, most of which are owned and maintained by Consumers Energy. The other street lights, mainly in the downtown area, are owned and maintained by Department of Engineering. The city street lights are high-pressure sodium and energy efficient. They are designed and installed to provide a safe level of illumination on the roadways. The average light bulb has an effective life of about four years.

The Department of Engineering works with Consumers Energy to install new streetlights as requested by the Police Department, City Councilmembers or City citizens. When a request is received, department staff investigates the necessity of additional lighting based on the proximity of existing street lights. If you believe a new street light would be beneficial in your neighborhood, you can call the Traffic Manager/Engineering Assistant at 788-4170.
