City of Jackson

Parking Management

Parking management is now a part of the Department of Public Works. This section of the department consists of the Parking Manager and two Parking Enforcement Workers. The Parking Enforcement Workers monitor parking in the downtown parking lots and on downtown streets from First Street to Francis Street  and from Glick Highway to Wesley Street. The Police Department also monitors parking downtown as well as the entire city.

Lots and Decks

A new system of parking permits has been instituted in the downtown area. Permits can be purchased from the Clerk's Office at 161 W. Michigan Avenue. These permits are color coded for specific parking lots. Permit parking and visitor parking spaces are identified by signs in each of the lots. Permit parking is reserved between 8:00 a.m.and 5:00 p.m. daily. See the table below for parking lot sizes and permit costs. We have also included a map to show the downtown parking lots.

The City also owns two parking decks that are operated just like the permit parking lots. As with the surface lots when permit parking is posted, the permit parking is reserved between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. daily. Permit lots and the parking decks are available for public parking after 5:00 p.m. weekdays until 6:00 a.m. the next weekday and all weekend.

Drivers with any valid, state-issued handicapped tags on their vehicles are welcome to park as long as necessary in all visitor areas of the city lots and on city streets. Handicapped parking spaces are not provided on the city streets due to possible unsafe entry and exit from the vehicle by the handicapped driver.

Pay and Park

If you will be conducting business downtown for an extended period, there are two ways available for you to park legally without the concern of receiving a time-limit citation. First, you can go to the Clerk’s Office on the first floor of City Hall and purchase a permit for $2.00, which will allow you to park in any City Parking Lot 2 or 3-hour visitor’s parking place for the entire day.

The second option is the Pay-to-Park facility, which is the in the city parking lot between Washington Avenue and Wesley Street across from the YMCA. The fee for parking in this lot is $1.00 per car per day. To use this lot, simply park your vehicle and note the parking stall number in which you are located. Walk to the pay station and deposit $1.00 in the numbered slot that corresponds to the parking space number. You may then conduct your business worry-free for the remainder of the day.

As with all City of Jackson parking lot regulations, these programs are in effect between the hours of 8:00 a.m.and 5:00 p.m. weekdays. Parking is free after 5:00 p.m. weekdays and on weekends.

Any questions regarding parking in Jackson can be directed to the Department of Public Works-Engineering 517-788-4170. Ask for the Parking Manager.
