Effective on September 15,
2000 the City of Jackson Water Department began actively enforcing City
policy regarding tenant responsibility for water bills.
This policy is in Section 27-112 of the Jackson City Code of
Ordinances which requires a deposit must be paid to the Water Department
before an account will be put into the name of a tenant.
This deposit will be held until the tenant moves out of the
property, at that time it will be applied to the tenant’s final bill.
The amount of the deposit has been set at a flat rate of $200.00.
This policy applies to all rental properties in the City of
Jackson water system. Copies
of the code enforcing this policy are available through the Water
Billing Office.
When an account is to be put
into a tenant’s name there will also be an agreement to be signed by
both the property owner and the tenant. The owner’s signature is required to give the approval to
the Water Department to change the account into the tenant’s name.
The tenant’s signature is also required to show proof that the
tenant understands the responsibility to pay the water bill.
Copies of this agreement can be printed and taken to the 1st
floor of City Hall for processing.
