The City Treasurer’s office would like to thank
the citizens of Jackson for their patience during the transitional
period from one building to another. We had some obstacles to overcome
but together we worked it out.
Our office is always seeking ways to improve services to the citizens of
Jackson. We initiated the e-payment system for paying water and tax
bills. You can now pay your bills on the Internet by accessing our
website at www.cityofjackson.org. You have the ability to have the funds
taken directly from your bank account when due, or pay by Visa or
MasterCard. You may also use your credit card by phone by calling 1
(800) 438-9926. There is a convenience fee for using your credit card.
This fee goes directly to the credit card company to cover their costs,
and not to the City. Many people have used this service so far, to pay
their bills, and have found it to be very convenient.
Of course, you may still want to pay your taxes and water bills the
preferred way, that’s by coming down to the office to pay, or sending
them in through the mail. Our offices are open Monday through Friday
between the hours of 8:00 and 5:00. Here, you will be cordially greeted
by our staff and taken care of in a professional manner. Our staff is
cross-trained for all transactions in the office, and is knowledgeable
about most questions people usually have concerning City government. We
are now located back at 161 W. Michigan Avenue, in our newly renovated
offices.
Our office sends out over 16,000 real and personal property tax bills to
citizens twice a year. Summer property tax bills can be paid either in
full by July 31st or in five installments by the 20th of the month
starting in July through November. Winter tax bills are payable in full
from December 1st through February 14th.
The City of Jackson is one of 22 Cities that have a local income tax. We
have had it since 1970! Any citizen of Jackson that makes over $600.00 a
year, must file forms and pay 1% to the City. All non-residents that
work in the City must file and pay ½ of 1% to our City. All businesses
are subject to the 1% tax. Our office handles over 30,000 tax forms a
year. All forms are audited for accuracy. The income tax is the largest
revenue producer for the City. It represents 32% of the total budget.
Forms are sent out to everyone who filed the previous year. Paper forms
are available at our office or at the library. You may download a form
from our website, under the Treasurer’s site.
