JACKSON COUNTY TIP LINE & CRIME VIEW COMMUNITY

local neighborhood public safety and community alerts and advisories by text, email, web

CRIME VIEW COMMUNITY

Crime View Community is an interactive tool designed to show citizens what type of crimes are happening in their neighborhood. Crime View allows you to search near an address, a location (park, school, etc.), or within your PACT area. Crime View also allows you to search for both specific crimes or for all crimes. Once you tell it the number of days to review, Crime View will create a map showing each crime located that satisfies the choices you made. By clicking on one of the icons showing a crime, Crime View provides you with further information on that incident.

We encourage you to use Crime View to learn what is going on in your neighborhood and community.

The Jackson County Tip Line is a way to convey information about a crime. Callers to the Tip Line do not have to give their name, and can report any information about a past crime. The information is then passed on to the appropriate law enforcement agency that is investigating the crime.

THE HISTORY OF THE JACKSON POLICE DEPARTMENT

The Jackson Police Department was formed in 1873 under the direction of the Mayor, until 1886 when it was placed in the hands of a three member police commission. Presently, the police department reports to the Office of the City Manager by charter.

Over the years, the police department has had twenty-five different chiefs. The first was Chief Frank Standish (1873 – 1875). The department then consisted of the Chief and seven officers. The officers of this era were paid $0.16 per hour. They worked ten hours per day, seven days per week. The patrolman’s job was the most sought after in the city!

From the early 1870’s through the mid 1930’s, four of the Jackson Police Chiefs had also been the Jackson County Sheriff at some time. Those four men were: Chief E. Winney, Chief J. Boyle, Chief J. Stroble, and Chief G. Bean.

Since December 2007, the Jackson Police Department has been under the direction of Chief Matthew R. Heins. The department now has a complement of 71 sworn and 24 civilian personnel.

Jackson’s first police station was located in the basement of the County Building at 245 West Michigan Avenue. The lockup consisted of one large and two small cells. The prisoners were fed bread and water and paid for their crime at the rock pile out back. Today’s police station was constructed in 1952 at 216 East Washington Avenue.

With the purchase of its first automobile patrol wagon on January 29, 1911, the department moved into the auto age. The patrol wagon was purchased from the Jackson Auto Company for a cost of $1,300. Officer Clifford Hockman was appointed the first driver.

In 1999 the Jackson Police Department partnered with the Michigan Regional Community Policing Institute at Michigan State University. This began one of the most massive changes in JPD history, changing over to a Community Policing philosophy. Several committees spent hundreds of hours planning what would happen, and when. In February 2002, the Jackson Police Department divided the city into eight PACT areas and changed its focus to a problem solving based method of fighting crime and improving the quality of life for the citizens of Jackson.

Through it all, the Jackson Police Department remains one of the best trained, educated, and equipped departments in the state.
