Captain John Holzapfel - End of Watch - February 5, 1907

Officer Leonard Carey - End of Watch - December 13, 1930

Lieutenant William James Nixon - End of Watch - April 27, 1978

Officer Kurt D. Engler
March 30, 1972 – March 4, 2007

Officer Kurt Engler was hired March 19, 1999 by the Jackson Police Department as a patrol officer. In 2004, he was selected as the School Liaison Officer for the Middle School at Parkside.

Officer Engler graduated from Kingston High School in 1990. He then went on to earn an Associate’s Degree from Lansing Community College in 1997. He attended and graduated from Northeastern Police Academy in Saginaw, Michigan.

Kurt has received numerous commendations, letters of appreciation, and awards. In 2003 he received the Jackson Police Department’s Lifesaving Award for convincing a suicidal man not to take his own life. For his work in a child abuse investigation, Officer Engler was to receive the Jackson Police Department Merit Citation at the annual Law Enforcement Cooperative Banquet in May 2007.

In 2004, as part of a Jackson Police Department Michigan Police Pistol Match team, Officer Engler and his team placed third in their division of police departments across the state.

Since 2000, Kurt was a proud member of the Jackson Police Department Honor Guard. He also served as a Community Officer and as Acting Sergeant of the Detective Unit.

Kurt was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying bird hunting and ice fishing. He also loved spending time training and working his Weimaraners, Willow and Aspen.

Kurt will be sadly missed by his wife, Gina, and their family, and by the family that is the Jackson Police Department.

THE MONUMENT

I never dreamed it would be me,
My name for all eternity,

Recorded here at this hallowed place.
Alas, my name, no more my face.

"In the line of duty", I hear them say;
My family now the price to pay.

My folded flag stained with their tears;
We only had those few short years.

The badge no longer on my chest
I sleep now in eternal rest.

My sword I pass to those behind,
And pray they keep this thought in mind.

I never dreamed it would be me,
And with heavy heart and bended knee,

I ask for all here from the past;
Dear God, let my name be the last.

- George Huhn, Retired Sergeant, LAPD
