Woodland Cemetery was purchased from local
landowner James C. Wood in 1890. The original purchase was 25 acres.
More acreage was purchased over the years to bring to total to 68 acres.
While Woodland is not the oldest of
Jackson’s two city-owned cemeteries, it does have the oldest burials.
Before Jackson was founded the first cemetery was on East Michigan
Avenue. As the city expanded eastward, it was decided to disinter and
reinter the remains of our city’s pioneers to Woodland.
Our mausoleum, built in 1919, is a
beautiful example of early 20th century mausoleum
architecture. There are also numerous private family mausoleums
throughout the cemetery.
Today our chapel, built in 1975, provides
a peaceful and fitting site for interment services. We are always
improving Woodland and invite you to visit our beautiful cemetery.
