PARKS & RECREATION DIVISION

The Department of Parks, Recreation and Grounds continues to upgrade your Parks and Recreation Programs.

The Ella Sharp Park Golf Course re-design and renovation has been completed and the "new" course opened to the public in March of 2001.

The Ella Sharp Park Board of Trustees began work with a professional landscape architect to develop a landscaping plan for the main entrance to Ella Sharp Park new signage, additional trees and flowering shrubs will be included in the new landscaping plan.

Betsy Butterfield Park has been totally re-designed and opened to the public in the Fall of 2000. The Park includes new landscaping, a water feature, playground structure, and a statue of children at play.

Nixon Park renovations have been completed and opened on October 13,2001. The improvements include new skateboard park, full size in-line hockey rink, and a new water park. The old swimming pool has been renovated and transformed into a zero depth pool with special water features, a spiral water slide, and a drop slide.

Park projects which will be emphasized in the coming year include the inter-city trail between Airline Drive and Francis Street along the Grand River. The vision for this section of the trail includes naturalizing the Grand River, and a possible amphitheater.

The Parks Division is also planning a community build playground project at Martin Luther King Center with fund raising efforts running through 2002 and the playground construction scheduled for 2003.
