The Department of
Parks, Recreation and Grounds continues to upgrade your Parks and
Recreation Programs.
The Ella Sharp Park Golf Course re-design
and renovation has been completed and the "new" course opened
to the public in March of 2001.
The Ella Sharp Park Board of Trustees
began work with a professional landscape architect to develop a
landscaping plan for the main entrance to Ella Sharp Park new signage,
additional trees and flowering shrubs will be included in the new
landscaping plan.
Betsy Butterfield Park has been totally
re-designed and opened to the public in the Fall of 2000. The Park
includes new landscaping, a water feature, playground structure, and a
statue of children at play.
Nixon Park renovations have been
completed and opened on October 13,2001. The improvements include new
skateboard park, full size in-line hockey rink, and a new water park.
The old swimming pool has been renovated and transformed into a zero
depth pool with special water features, a spiral water slide, and a drop
slide.
Park projects which will be emphasized in
the coming year include the inter-city trail between Airline Drive and
Francis Street along the Grand River. The vision for this section of the
trail includes naturalizing the Grand River, and a possible
amphitheater.
The Parks Division is also planning a
community build playground project at Martin Luther King Center with
fund raising efforts running through 2002 and the playground
construction scheduled for 2003.
