The City of
Jackson Forestry Division maintains the 25,000 plus trees that exist on
city streets and parks. A combination of contractual and staff labor is
used to evaluate, maintain, prune, and remove hazardous trees in our
urban forest.
The forestry group continues to actively promote
and participate in many varied beautification efforts within the city.
Recent examples include the "Adopt-a-Planter" program within
the Central Business District, and Arbor Day celebration at Northeast
Elementary School, design and installation of traffic island plantings
in conjunction with the "Under the Oaks" neighborhood group,
and the development of rose gardens sponsored by the Midtown
Association. Demand for the forestry staff’s professional services
continues to expand with the addition of landscape maintenance duties in
downtown public spaces, Grand River Park/Kuhl’s Market, and other
recently remodeled and renovated parks.
The leaf composting program continues to be
popular with city residents, gardeners, and local nurserymen. For the
third consecutive year, all available compost was distributed, creating
$15,000 in revenue. Blackman Township officials have recently agreed to
enter into a cooperative agreement with the city to provide leaf
recycling services at our facility, increasing popularity and future
revenues.
