Public
Fire Education continues to be a very important part of the overall
activities of the Fire Prevention Bureau.
It would however, be unwise at the very least, to continue to
educate the public about fire safety and not concern ourselves with the
overall safety of the community. We must widen our focus and truly become life safety
educators.
On
average, the Jackson Fire Department responds to over 4,500 emergency
calls per year, with more than 10 Emergency Medical calls for every fire
calls. In order to respond
to the needs of the public, we must look at expanding our education
services to include things such as hot water and steam burns, pool
safety, helmets for bikes, and child restraint devices for automobiles.
We are taking a closer look at the situations precipitating the
requests for EMS services.
We
continue to promote fire prevention in several different ways.
One was our Open House held at Central Station during Fire
Prevention Week. The
turnout of children and adults, plus the host of friends and family who
participated, made for a very worthwhile project.
Among featured attractions was a booth sponsored and manned by
the DNR, a smoke detector display, the Fire Safety House and a kitchen
fire demonstration. Once
again Art Moehn Chevrolet and their staff provided hot dogs, challenged
the firefighters to a water ball fight and provided financial support.
Other area companies provided donuts, cider, juice and iced tea
to make this project a success.
Fire
safety education programs are conducted programs at many of the areas
pre-schools and day care facilities with the Fire Safety House focused
on second and third grade elementary students. The Bureau maintains
community contacts through local events such as the County Fair, the
Home Builders Show, Fire Prevention Week activities at local schools,
Scouting programs, radio and newspaper public service announcements and
distribution of thousands of brochures on a variety of safety topics.
