In-Service
Inspection Program
The
Fire Prevention Bureau administers the In-Service Inspection Program
wherein suppression personnel inspect the business and commercial
occupancies in the City, citing violations of the Fire Prevention Code.
Electrical systems and connections, exits, storage, housekeeping,
heating equipment, underground storage facilities, fire protection
systems, compressed gas storage, general maintenance and proper posting
of addresses are among the items checked during these inspections.
While
the majority of deficiencies cited involved housekeeping, electrical
maintenance, improper usage of extension cords, fire extinguishers in
need of service, inadequate or lack of address posting, and exit
lighting in need of maintenance, the value of this program lies in the
reduction of fires in business and commercial properties over the last
several years. The program
also affords the suppression personnel the opportunity to become
acquainted with the buildings and the types of conditions they might
encounter should an emergency situation arise.
The
In-Service Inspection Program is also used as a mechanism to follow-up
information gathered in compliance with Fire Fighter Right-to-Know
and SARA Title III survey data and engine companies are assigned the
preparation of Pre-Incident Surveys, as required by state and
federal regulations.
There
are approximately 1,680 businesses and commercial occupancies in the
City that are inspected under this program.
