| The
Department of Engineering maintains more than 11,000 traffic and street
name signs. The signs are designed and installed according to Michigan
Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices. They are grouped into several
categories:

such as speed, stop or yield signs;
Warning, which
are diamond-shaped with a yellow background, such as "curve
ahead"; and
Guide, which
usually have green or brown backgrounds that help motorists
navigate through unfamiliar areas.
Problems with existing signs can be reported in
several ways, depending on the urgency of the problem.
Missing or damaged STOP or YIELD signs are
considered urgent and can be reported in two ways:
- Call Department of Engineering 8:00 a.m.
to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, at 517/788-4160.
- Call Police Department during nights or
weekends at 517/788-4100.
Non-urgent sign problems can be reported in two
ways:
- E-mail
us with a description of the location of the problem and any other pertinent information.
- Call Department of Engineering at 517/788-4160. A receptionist will receive the call 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
