PLAN REVIEW, ZONING and PERMITS

If you plan on building on your property in the City of Jackson, you are at the right web site.  The Building Division reviews plans for new construction and improvements, receives and processes permit applications and inspects work covered by those permits. Please call us to find out when review plans and permits are needed and what to bring with you to obtain plan review approval or file for a permit . Permits can be issued within 24 hours if all information conforms to requirements.

Contractors must be registered by the City of Jackson Building Division. To register, each contractor must bring their State of Michigan certification and the appropriate fee to the Building Division.  Call the Building Division at 788-4012 for the correct fee.

Budget Crunch Forces Building Permit Increases

In recent months, the City of Jackson implemented several initiatives in an attempt to bring expenses in line with declining revenues. Most recently, the City Council approved an increase in building permit fees. The increase in these user fees will ease the burden on all City taxpayers who previously subsidized a portion of inspection or building permits for which they received no direct benefit. The cost of the inspection service will now be the responsibility of the property owner receiving the service. Previously, the General Fund heavily subsidized the cost of inspection services. For example, the General Fund paid the full amount for an inspection of a premise for a liquor permit. However, with the recent adoption of the revised permit schedule, the person receiving the service will be solely responsible to pay the cost of the inspection.
