DOWNTOWN ASSISTANCE

The Jackson Downtown Development Authority works in coordination with the Midtown Merchant Group to facilitate growth within the Downtown District. The central contact for the programs listed below is the Jackson Downtown Development Authority, 161 West Michigan Avenue, 6th Floor, Jackson, MI 49201 (517) 788-4355 or visit www.jacksondda.org.

DDA Façade Improvement Grant Program
Administered by the Downtown Development Authority, this program offers assistance in the form of an interest free, “deferred” loan, forgivable over a five-year period. The program provides a match of 50% of the project cost with a maximum match of $15,000. Goals of the program include: improving the appearance of buildings, historic preservation, utilizing vacant space, and expanding the tax base in the Central Business District.

Jackson Downtown Rental Rehabilitation Program
This program, coordinated by the City’s Community Development Department and the Downtown Development Authority, provides property owners with a grant for up to $25,000 per unit (or 75% of the cost of the project, whichever is les) to construction a maximum of three units in currently unutilized space. Fifty-one percent of the units must be rented to tenants whose income is equal to or less than 80% of the area median income. Funding is limited and may not be available at this time.

DDA Mystery Shopper Program
Provided by the Downtown Development Authority, this program offers business owners a chance to evaluate their customer service. Four evaluators of varied demographics evaluate the business and provide confidential feedback to the business owner, so improvements can be made to the service they provide. The program is free to the first 10 businesses that participate. After which, businesses are charged a $25 fee. This program is on a first come, first serve basis.

Midtown Association Paint Program
A program focused on improving the exterior of Midtown Member’s building provides up to 50% of the painting project cost or a maximum of $500. This program meets the needs of property owners that need to update their exterior without major improvements that would typically apply for Façade Improvement Loans. Funding is limited and may not be available at this time.
