Department of Community Development

Downtown Business Assistance

The Economic Development Division of the Community Development Department works in conjunction with the Jackson Downtown Development Authority and the Midtown Merchant Group to provide businesses with ample resources for growth in Jackson’s vibrant downtown district. These programs and services range in their areas of focus, but are all designed to facilitate the success of business in Jackson.

DDA Façade Improvement Grant Program

This DDA program offers assistance in the form of an interest-free, “deferred” loan, forgivable over a five-year period. The program also provides a 50% match of the project cost, up to $15,000. The goals of this program are mainly focused on improving the appearance of buildings and preserving their historic architecture, but it is also used to expand the tax base in the Central Business District.

Midtown Association Paint Program

This program is also focused on improving buildings’ exteriors. It provides 50% of the painting project cost, up to a maximum of $500. This program is designed for property owners who need to update their businesses’ exteriors without drastic or major improvements that would typically qualify them for a Façade Improvement Grant. Funding is limited and may not be available at this time.

Jackson Downtown Rental Rehabilitation Program

This program is coordinated by both the EDD and DDA, providing property owners with a grant which covers 75% of the project cost, up to $25,000 per unit. The grant must be used to construct a maximum of three units in a currently un-utilized space. Fifty-one percent of the units must then be rented to tenants whose income is equal to or less than 80% of the area median income. Funding is limited and may not be available at this time.
