Here are some highlights from the Feb. 11, 2020 meeting of the Jackson City Council:

-Increased water rates to pay for lead service line replacements dominated the meeting. A presentation was given during the meeting by the City Manager about the latest cost estimate to pay for the lead service line replacement program. City staff estimate $232 million is needed to be raised to replace 14,000 lead service lines in the City over 35 years. This estimate includes the cost of replacing lead service lines, labor, equipment, and the repairs that will have to be made to streets, sidewalks and lawns. The plan also calls for creating a program that will offset increased water costs for low-income users. This is only an initial estimate and an official proposal is yet to be considered by the council.

-The prior water contract with Consumers Energy postponed at the council’s last meeting was not given any further consideration from the council after it was determined the agreement was terminated. The City is yet to be served with a lawsuit by Consumers Energy.

-City Clerk Andrea Muray was hired on full time by the council after her employment contract was approved. She was previously working part-time.

-A conditional facility license was granted to a proposed medical marijuana dispensary that’s planned on N. West Ave. Further approval for the facility will be considered this spring. The approval was postponed after the City looked into the facility’s proximity to a virtual school in the Jackson Crossing Mall.
