The City of Jackson is welcoming a new leader to Downtown Jackson! Cory Mays recently came on board as the Executive Director of the Jackson Downtown Development Authority.
Mays, a long-time Jackson resident, comes to the DDA after working in education and non-profits. A former music teacher at Michigan Center High School, Mays most recently served as the Executive Director of the Michigan Music Education Association. He was hired by the Jackson DDA Board of Directors to fill the vacant Executive Director position.
The new DDA director says he’s looking forward to organizing various downtown events and advocating for businesses. “Downtown is in this amazing spot right now. It’s growing so much with events, new businesses, and more people coming downtown. A chance to be a part of that is super exciting,” Mays said. A goal of his is to establish more events throughout the year that will increase awareness of what’s available downtown. “We have a great opportunity to engage more with our businesses and see what we can do to help them,” Mays said.
Downtown Jackson has seen nearly $100 million in private and public investment since 2015. There are currently three major apartment developments taking shape in the downtown area. Mays believes these developments will bring with more retail opportunities for residents. “As more people come to live downtown, we can work on attracting more businesses, like getting a grocery store or some kind of market down here,” Mays said.
City Manager and DDA Board Member Patrick Burtch says Mays will help take Downtown Jackson to the next level. “Cory brings lots of energy and enthusiasm to the Executive Director position. We’re looking forward to working with him and seeing the great things he can do for the community,” Burtch said.
The Jackson Downtown Development Authority is located on the 5th Floor of Jackson City Hall. Executive Director Cory Mays can be reached by phone at 517-768-6410 and by email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
