A busy construction season in Jackson continues this week, with crews starting work on four city streets. One of the road construction projects impacts a major thoroughfare in Downtown Jackson, while the three other projects are happening on neighborhood streets.
W. Michigan Avenue from N. Blackstone Street and First Street in Downtown Jackson is receiving a big overhaul. Construction on this one block section will continue streetscape improvements in the downtown area. Crews will remove and replace the full depth of pavement, along with a decades-old brick sanitary sewer. Sidewalks, parking orientation, landscaping, and lighting will also be replaced to match the rest of Michigan Avenue in the downtown area. Construction is set to wrap up in late August. This section of W. Michigan will be closed to through traffic during construction. Access to businesses will be maintained.
The other construction projects are happening in a neighborhood on Jackson’s west side. Efforts to resurface Thompson, Durand, and Higby streets continues. Starting this week, crews will begin work to resurface pavement, repair curbs and sidewalks, and replace sidewalk ramps on Thompson, Durand and Higby streets between W. Michigan Avenue and Wildwood Avenue.
These streets will be closed to through traffic when under construction. However, access to homes and businesses will be maintained. This phase of the project is set to wrap up in mid-August. Other sections of these streets were successfully resurfaced earlier this spring.
Residents and business patrons are asked to not park on streets when construction is underway. The City of Jackson Engineering Division is sending out regular updates to residents and businesses to keep them informed on construction progress.
